The Bank of New York Mellon Corp. building at 1 Wall St. is seen in New York's financial district March 11, 2015. BNY Mellon, the sole settlement agent for Treasury securities, disconnected the Chinese bank from the platform after the hack and is waiting for a third party to attest that it is safe to reconnect, the sources said. The attack, confirmed by ICBC on Thursday, is the latest in a string of demands for ransom that hackers have claimed this year. ICBC Financial Services, the bank's U.S. unit, said it was investigating the attack that disrupted some of its systems, and making progress toward recovering from it. "We're in a period when the Treasury market needs to be relied upon for its safety and liquidity," Nate Wuerffel, head of market structure at BNY Mellon, said in an interview. "And if on top of that you're trying to implement very rapidly a fundamental reassembly of the Treasury market, that's when you run the risk of having market functioning deteriorate." Liquidity crunches in recent years have raised regulatory concerns about the Treasury market's ability to function during times of stress. "Central clearing will strengthen the market’s core attributes of safety and liquidity in times of stress.

"An extended implementation timeline in the final rule could substantially lower the risk that the transition itself could worsen market functioning," Wuerffel said in a note on Wednesday.

The Bank of New York Mellon Corp. building at 1 Wall St. is seen in New York's financial district March 11, 2015. Last week, JPMorgan (JPM.N), Wells Fargo (WFC.N) and Citigroup (C.N) beat analysts' estimates for the latest quarter and raised FY23 interest income forecasts. BNY Mellon's net interest revenue for the reported quarter jumped nearly 10% to $1.02 billion, compared with $926 million a year earlier. While higher interest rates have benefited banks, they have also deepened fears of more loan defaults, prompting lenders to maintain reserves on the sidelines. New York-based BNY Mellon kept aside $3 million in provision for credit losses for the quarter.

The bank said it expects full year NII to be up about 8% at about $57 billion. The bank's full year NII outlook remains unchanged at 20% growth, Chief Financial Officer Dermot McDonogh told analysts. Overall, its profit slipped 18% in the second quarter as a fewer deals hurt investment banking revenues. Sluggish deals have been a sore spot across Wall Street with global investment banking activity plunging to $15.7 billion in the second quarter, the lowest since 2012, according to Dealogic. While investment banking and trading were also a drag on earnings for big banks on Friday, JPMorgan likewise said the bank was seeing “green shoots” in trading and investment banking.

REUTERS/Nacho Doce/File PhotoWASHINGTON, July 18 (Reuters) - Big U.S. banks on Tuesday said higher interest rates had helped boost profits in the second quarter, causing shares to spike, but a pullback in consumer spending, slower loan growth and increased deposit costs may cloud the outlook for the sector. Bank of America's net interest income (NII), which measures the difference between what banks earn on loans and pay out on deposits, rose 14% to $14.2 billion in the second quarter, helping it to beat Wall Street estimates. The bank said it expects full year NII to be up about 8% at about $57 billion. That has forced some banks to offer consumers higher returns to deter them from moving their deposits to competitors. Overall, the bank's profit slipped 18% in the second quarter as Wall Street's deal-making drought stunted revenue from investment banking, although investors were cheered by executives' positive outlook for M&A.

WASHINGTON, June 28 (Reuters) - Big U.S. banks' commercial real estate portfolios put in a surprisingly good performance during the Federal Reserve's annual health checks, with losses declining slightly on last year, the central bank said on Wednesday. With risks growing in the commercial real estate (CRE) sector globally, analysts and investors were looking to the Fed's "stress tests" for more insight on how exposed the country's lenders are to falling real estate prices. Commercial real estate (CRE), especially offices, has been hit by interest rates hikes and workers choosing to stay at home. The Fed's annual bank "stress tests" established following the 2007-2009 financial crisis probe how lenders would fare against an extreme scenario: a 40% decline in commercial real estate values. The average projected CRE loan loss rate across the group was 8.8% of average loan balances, compared with 9.8% last year, the Fed said.

Berger had already been sentenced to eight years in jail in December after a similar trial. The public prosecutor had demanded a prison sentence of 10 and a half years and the confiscation of assets. Berger's sentences follow nearly a decade of investigations that government officials say span around 1,500 suspects and 100 banks on four continents. Authorities have raided the German branches of companies including Barclays (BARC.L), Bank of America (BAC.N), JP Morgan (JPM.N) and Morgan Stanley (MS.N) in their investigations. In September, Bank of New York Mellon Corp (BK.N), Germany's Warburg Group and Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) said they would pay a combined 60 million euros to tax authorities over the scandal.
The S&P Regional Banking Index fell approximately 25% during the quarter as a run on deposits sank Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in March, both of which were at the time the largest banking failures since the Great Financial Crisis. The S&P Regional Banking index is now down 36% for the year to date. Famed "Big Short" investor Michael Burry's Scion Asset Management, meanwhile, added a number of new positions in regional banks, including stakes in First Republic, PacWest (PACW.O) and Western Alliance Bancorp (WAL.N). Shares of regional banks have remained volatile in recent weeks, with some investors wary of more tumult to come in the sector. London-based Marshall Wace sold 51,300 shares of First Republic in the first quarter, closing its position in the bank.
